Nov 5 Sooke Fishing Update

The Sooke Harbour Derby continues...19 salmon weighed in so far, with only 1 small coho and the rest winter springs. Where are all those big chum?

Mark Price of Footloose Charters is the current leader, with a 12.7 pound chinook. Four days to go, lots of good prizes up for grabs...and it's for a good cause...support the Sooke Salmon Enhancement Society and go catch some fish! [photo below courtesy of fishtactics.com]

Here's Kiwi Magic's report from this week's Sooke News Mirror:

"The reports out of Sooke the last few days of Halibut fishing were pretty darn good. Fishing between Secretary Island and Sheringham Point some anglers were limited out on the tasty critters, just in time before the closure for the rest of the year on October 31, which will probably last till March of 2009. Doesn’t sound like the stocks in this area are trouble, the closure is a political numbers game with the anglers losing out. With only salmon and crabbing the only opportunity on the water these days, what will be next?

Well, the Sooke Harbour Fishing Derby is going strong with over 60 entries so far, and there’s still time to buy tickets before the wind-up this Sunday afternoon, so far it looks to be a success. Although at press time the elusive Chum had yet to be weighted in, quite a few winter springs with the biggest being 12.79 pounds as well as one coho. Sunday afternoon featured a BBQ hosted by the marina gang with the proceeds going to salmon enhancement as well as the entry fees too. This coming Sunday another BBQ will be held 12 – 3 p.m. which at that time the winners will be announced. Try fishing the mouth of the Sooke Harbour in the 100’ to 120’ foot line seems to be working for some of the early weight-ins. Hootchies, bait, herring, and herring strip anchovies trolled in a teaser head behind a flasher should be good. Ask Eagle-Eye Outfitters they have all the goods to fit your winter fishing needs. More info on the derby call 250-642-3236 or admin@sookeharbourmarina.ca. For the results of the derby go to www.fishtactics.com. Until next time.

Keep your rod tip up!
