Vancouver Island Halibut Season Open, March 1

Vancouver Island's halibut season opens for 2009 on Sunday March 1st. This is great news! The winter spring salmon fishing around Sooke and Victoria has slowed down lately to "hit and miss" level...so the potential for chasing a fine flat fish for dinner adds more "flavour" to a day on the water.

Victoria anglers will once again set their GPS's to take them to their favourite halibut nooks and crannies, and seek out the mighty halibut...which many consider to be the finest eating in the ocean. There are numerous hotspots off Victoria, off Sooke, and west to Jordan River and beyond. Have a look at a chart and find your own hali hole...or avoid the hassle, and buy yourself a day with a local fishing guide and get them to take you directly there!

On the Sooke salmon front, it is a bit slower of late, described as hit and miss. Ryan from Fresh Fishin' lucked into a couple though: "caught three springs on the weekend..2 were 14 pounders...released a smaller one...anchovies with short leaders behind green hotspot". So there you...the only certainty is that you won't catch fish if you don't have a line in the water.

Good luck out there.

Effective March 1, 2009, recreational fishing for halibut will be opened coastwide. The daily limit at the start of the season is one (1) per day with a possession limit of two (2).

Fishery Notice

Category(s): RECREATIONAL - Fin Fish (Other than Salmon)
Subject: FN0101-Halibut: Further to FN0037 & Amendment to FN0100 - Coastwide Opening and Limits

The department will implement a coastwide opening of the recreational halibut
fishery:

Coastwide:
---------
Effective 00:01 hours March 1, 2009 fishing for halibut will be opened
coastwide. The daily limit at the start of the season is one (1) per day with a
possession limit of two (2).

The exception to this opening is:

Areas 121, 23 and 123:
---------------------
Effective 00:01 hours March 1, 2009 to 23:59 hours December 31, 2009:

- No person shall fish for or retain halibut, rockfish and lingcod in Area 121
outside the 12 nautical mile limit seaward of a line that begins at 48 degrees
34.000 minutes North latitude and 125 degrees 17.386 minutes West longitude and
continues south easterly at a bearing of 116 degrees True to a point at 48
degrees 28.327 minutes North latitude and 125 degrees 01.687 minutes West
longitude.

- Electronic licence conditions will be continued as follows:
"no person who is not a Canadian resident may fish for or retain halibut under
this licence in management Areas 121, 23 and 123."

In an effort to open the recreational fishery while some key issues with
respect to the 2009 management plan remain unresolved, the initial halibut
retention limit will be one per day, two in total possession. The department
expects to complete its consultations with the recreational sector on the
halibut management plan for 2009 before the end of February, including
examining the feasibility of increasing the daily limits. The plan will include
measures for monitoring and evaluating the catch in-season. Any changes in the
management plan following these consultations will be announced in a subsequent
Fishery Notice.

February 18 Sooke Fishing Report

Sooke's salmon fishing has slowed down a bit in the last couple of weeks. There are still winter chinooks out there, but it's hit and miss...some days good, some days slow.

From the Sooke News-Mirror: "Now that’s a Prime Time fish! Cheryl Piec of Sooke grits her teeth as she displays her catch, a 29-pound chinook salmon she caught off Sooke recently. The big one was taken near Possession Point and weighed-in at Sunny Shores Marina & Resort. Fishing has been spotty lately although according to Cheryl’s catch anything is possible. "

Ron from Sidetrack Fishing Charters was out on the weekend, on a beautiful sunny Saturday. He reports getting a nice one in the low teens and 3 other smaller, plus a couple of other hits)... Good day over all.

The weather is getting warmer, the bulbs are starting to come out, has spring sprung in Sooke? Slow fishing or not, if you have the time and means, get out there and enjoy some time on the water. And before too much longer, those early Fraser "Columbians" will be passing through...scrappy Chinook "footballs", good times ahead!

Good luck out there.
