"Go get ‘em at the Sooke Bluffs and the Trap

Now that the boats are getting taken care of, fish are starting to be caught with more anglers heading out onto the salt chuck. Local guides are picking up salmon up to 25 pounds and with the early outlook of catches this next little while should be good.

With slot restriction being lifted in eight days, on May 14, fishing for the big ones will happen. Anglers are fishing anywhere from Sheringham Point to the west and Church Rock to the east and local hot spots should start to surrender some nice catches.

I remember when fishing legend Big Red Exton said that anywhere between the Sooke Bluffs and Otter Point you should nail something close to 20 pounds at this time of year. It’s just like in the winter fish close to the bottom in 100 feet of water.

Try fishing tiny herring strips in a teaser head or coyote spoons if you notice needle fish in the stomach of your catches. Chances are that’s what they’re feeding on.

Halibut continue to be caught with good tides this past week.
