May 19 Sooke Fishing Report

Fishing around Sooke has been hot and cold for salmon this week. After an excellent start to the week, with Trap Shack on fire, things seem to have calmed down a bit. There are still regular reports of nice 15-20 pound salmon being caught, but there are also reports of some slower days.

On the other hand, halibut fishing from Victoria to west of Sooke continues to be excellent, with plentiful halibut and some big ones thrown into the mix.

Trevor from No Bananas Fishing Charters had a good few days fishing in Victoria and Port Renfrew. First they caught a bunch of halibut off Victoria, with 4 the first morning up to 90lbs and a limit the next day with halibut up to 60 lbs. The next day, off to Port Renfrew, where they limited on Spring Salmon up to 25 pounds. Good times!

It looks to be a good season ahead for salmon fishing on Vancouver Island's south-west coast.

Have fun out there!

Sooke Salmon Fishing Update

It is open season for Spring Salmon fishing in Sooke once again, with the "slot limit" removed today: Sooke Fishing Regulations

This means you can keep two BIG chinook salmon per day, whether hatchery or marked.

Reports are coming in of salmon caught from Sheringham to Otter Point, off the Sooke Bluffs, and at the Trap Shack. Yesterday, one lucky angler caught a 39.5 pounder at the Trap...to my mind, that's so darn close, I think I'd be calling it a 40 pounder! :-)

Game on!

Get your boat in the water and go out and catch some fish....and as always, even if you don't catch one, it's a nice way to spend a day...

Good luck out there.

May 11 Sooke Fishing Report

A couple more reports on Sooke fishing...

Roy from Blue Wolf Fishing reports a week ago he took guys from Alberta out for two days of Victoria halibut fishing. Day 1 saw them get a 25 and a 62, day 2 saw them with a 29, 33, and topped it off with a 105 pounder. Last weekend he brought out some people from Fort MacMurray and brought them in their limit of chicken-sized halibut.

Ryan from Fresh Fishin' went out salmon fishing Saturday, catching 3 springs in 2 hours. "We caught a 23 pounder about 30 seconds after putting the gear down. We also caught a 20 pounder that we released and kept a 14 pound hatchery. Last weekend we got 4 halibut in 45 minutes between 30 and 40 pounds. Halibut currents will be good again starting the 17th until the 21st".

May 9 Sooke Fishing Report

Sooke salmon fishing has been very good in the past week. Steve French of Seawind Fishing calls it the best May salmon fishing in Sooke he's seen in 8 years...and he ought to know!

John from Hindsight Fishing adds "The Trap Shack is on fire and Sheriham the same, but you can keep the fish at Sheringham without restrictions [there is a 67cm maximum east of Sheringham until May 14]. We caught 5 chinook in total this morning all around 25 lbs, kept 2. The salmon were caught at 70 feet with a old green teaser head behind a green and silver Hot Spot".

Ryan from Fresh Fishing sent in this report last week "We caught 2 hatchery chinooks off the Sooke Bluffs last sunday...16 pounder and a smaller 8 pounder that we released. 2 weeks ago it was on fire for catching and releasing halibut...we kept a 95 and a few about 45 to 50 pounders Pretty cool!"

Finally, Steve from Kiwi Magic Fishing Charters provided his weekly report in the Sooke News-Mirror, copied below.

Good luck out there!

"Go get ‘em at the Sooke Bluffs and the Trap

Now that the boats are getting taken care of, fish are starting to be caught with more anglers heading out onto the salt chuck. Local guides are picking up salmon up to 25 pounds and with the early outlook of catches this next little while should be good.

With slot restriction being lifted in eight days, on May 14, fishing for the big ones will happen. Anglers are fishing anywhere from Sheringham Point to the west and Church Rock to the east and local hot spots should start to surrender some nice catches.

I remember when fishing legend Big Red Exton said that anywhere between the Sooke Bluffs and Otter Point you should nail something close to 20 pounds at this time of year. It’s just like in the winter fish close to the bottom in 100 feet of water.

Try fishing tiny herring strips in a teaser head or coyote spoons if you notice needle fish in the stomach of your catches. Chances are that’s what they’re feeding on.

Halibut continue to be caught with good tides this past week.

If you happen to be to prawning in Saanich Inlet it will be closed from May 7 to 14. Until next time.

Keep your rod tip up!

They returned to the dock with a nice 56-pounder for their efforts — nice fish! While Ty Chamberlain of Calgary holds up a couple of nice chicken butts taken on Saturday off Sooke.]
